How to Pick the Right Headphones for Your Reading Life

You'd think headphones were simple. They're not. Walk into any electronics store and you'll be staring down a wall of options with no obvious way to tell which one is right for you. The good news: if you can answer five questions about how you actually listen, the right pair basically picks itself.

Question 1: Will these headphones be for audiobook listening only, or will they be multi-functional?

We're talking noise canceling, music, taking calls, ambient sounds... or my personal favorite: do you also need to hear your stop on the subway? (We'll dig deeper on all of these further into the post.)

If it's audiobooks only: You want full, rich sound and solid coverage over your ears. Over-ear headphones are your best friend here. They're built for immersion, they sound better at lower volumes (which is easier on your ears over a long listen), and they turn your reading nook into a private theater.

If they need to do more than one thing: The priorities shift fast. You'll want something versatile enough to switch modes without being a production, light enough to wear for different activities, and ideally not so bulky that you feel like an air traffic controller every time you put them on.

Question 2: Does the cord bother you, or do you not care?

Wireless is more convenient. No cord to snag, no being yanked out of your chair when you forget you're plugged in. But wired headphones have no battery to die mid-chapter, and they tend to sound better for the price. If you're the kind of person who forgets to charge things, wired might actually be less frustrating than you'd think.

Go wireless if: You move around while listening, you hate cables, or you want to pair easily between devices.

Go wired if: You do most of your listening in one spot, you'd rather not manage battery life, or you want the best sound for your budget.

Question 3: Are you listening on the go or staying put?

This is really a question about form factor.

Staying home: Go big if you want. Over-ear headphones are comfortable for long sessions, sound great, and you're not carrying them anywhere. A good set of over-ears for home use is one of the best investments a dedicated listener can make.

On the go: Size matters now. Bulky over-ears are annoying to carry and tend to look a little intense on public transit. This is where a compact set of on-ear headphones or a solid pair of wireless earbuds makes your life much easier. Look for a case that folds flat or earbuds with a small charging case that fits in a pocket.

Question 4: Do you need to be reachable?

Some people listen to fully disappear. Others need to be able to take a call without ripping their headphones off and scrambling for their phone.

If calls matter: Look for headphones with a built-in mic and easy switching between audio and call mode. Most wireless earbuds handle this well. Tap to answer, seamless transition back to your audiobook. Many over-ear options have this too, but check before you buy because it's not universal.

If calls don't matter: Skip the mic entirely and spend that part of your budget on better sound drivers. You'll hear the difference.

Question 5: Do you want to ignore the rest of the world?

This one's about noise canceling, and it's worth thinking about carefully before you pay for it.

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is genuinely impressive technology. It uses microphones to pick up ambient sound and cancels it out in real time. Great for planes, loud coffee shops, or a household that won't quiet down. If you've ever tried to listen while someone runs a dishwasher nearby, you understand the appeal.

Get noise canceling if: You listen in noisy environments, you're easily distracted by background sound, or you travel frequently.

Skip it if: You listen in a quiet space already, or you need some awareness of what's happening around you (kids at home, walking outside, etc.). Noise canceling also adds to the price and battery drain, so if you don't need it, you're paying for something you'll probably turn off anyway.
